Welcome back to the No Label Studio Blog! We are super excited to share the Vlog by Rio!
Rio, the owner of No Label Studio, wanted to spice up the blog this week and turn it into a fun vlog experience for readers. She offers a ton of great insights for people looking into cosmetology school, as well as answering a few common questions she receives frequently. Please check out the video to hear from Rio herself, but this written blog post will also go through the vlog and pick out her invaluable pro tips and the questions she answers!
At the beginning of the video, I wanted to capture the beauty of the new salon and show potential clients what they would be experiencing by booking an appointment at No Label. After the introduction, Rio starts off the vlog by giving a run down on all things Rio. She is 32 years old, a business owner, and a mom. She wanted to highlight her mistakes and things she has learned along her journey to make it easier for future stylists in their journey.
Starting with Rio’s Pro Tip #1:
Check out cosmetology programs at satellite schools.
Rio had the opportunity to start beauty school when she was 17 years old. Parents, if you’re reading and your child is interested in beauty school, look into programs at satellite schools within your school system while your child is in high school. These schools will offer beauty school at a much lower cost, around $400, compared to after high school, the price shoots up. After high school, beauty school can cost between $13,000-$60,000, so if your child shows an interest, it would be beneficial to start sooner rather than later. She would do a half day in high school and then go to beauty school in the afternoons. She also stated that it raised her GPA, which helped her a lot!
Pro Tip #2:
Find the right salon for you.
If you are currently in beauty school or looking into beauty school, Rio suggests trying to work at different salons to see the best fit for you. She worked at the most well-known salon in Zionsville at the time and was an apprentice. Becoming an apprentice at a local salon helped Rio see what vibe she enjoyed and what environment she liked to work in. The hands-on experience also really helped her skill set.
Pro Tip #3:
Get involved.
Rio’s old boss preached about getting involved in the community so clients would associate her face with her name. Now that social media is prevalent, people aren’t getting as engaged with the community as they were a few years ago. But, Rio suggests that upcoming stylists should focus on getting involved because you can grow your clientele with community involvement and meet new people in your community. Rio encourages her staff now to do community outreach at No Label.
Pro Tip #4:
Starting a career and family at the same time is difficult.
Work-life balance can be challenging if you are opening a new business and pregnant with your first child. Rio experienced this first-hand with her first baby while also starting No Label. Rio’s advice would be to wait if you can! That way, you can focus on your baby or your business. If you are ready to start a family and business, Rio notes that it will be challenging but that you will make it through!
Pro Tip #5:
Find staff who share your vision.
Rio states that hiring staff who share your passion and vision is super important. When she first opened No Label, she couldn’t afford support staff but could hire a stylist who shared her vision and wanted to gain more experience. Rio is picky about who she hires, but her main focus is work ethic and personality. She can teach anyone anything, but she looks for a strong work ethic and a great personality in her prospective stylists.
Pro Tip #6:
Never stop learning.
Nobody knows everything! When Rio began to grow her Apprentice Program, she looked at where to improve as a leader and teacher. She realizes that to be successful, she must continue her education in multiple areas of her life, especially hair.
Pro Tip #7:
Focus on social media.
Keep going even if your business is only getting three likes. Everyone starts somewhere; a smaller following is typically more interactive and personally involved with your content.
Pro Tip #8:
Never stop pushing for your future goals.
Never feel discouraged if your journey feels painful short-term or you feel like the money isn’t flowing in. Looking forward to how the work you’re putting in now will grow your future is the most important mindset to have. Don’t stop believing in yourself!
