Welcome back! This week we wanted to showcase two different hair care routines and how to utilize products that work best for your hair goals. We will be discussing a curly hair routine and a straight hair routine.
An essential piece of any great hair care routine is products that work to achieve your hair goals. The investment products in any hair care routine should be shampoo and conditioner. If you love your current shampoo and conditioner but want something extra, consider investing in a scalp serum for your health. A moisturized scalp creates a solid foundation for healthy hair growth and better-hydrated hair. This blog will give several recommendations for shampoo, conditioner, texturizing spray, hair oil, and shine sprays.
Both hair care routines will include a wash routine, a post-wash routine, and a styling routine. Each of these steps will consist of products that help achieve a specific look or promote a healthy head of hair.
Starting with the curly hair routine, Rio wanted to let readers know that she has a medium wave, and her hair can also get curly throughout the layers near her nose. Before washing, be sure to brush through your hair. Do not brush your hair after you have already washed it, as this can damage your curly hair. When Rio is ready to wash her hair, she typically does so with Leaf and Flower Curl Repair shampoo and conditioner. She has done lots of research, and this brand works well with her hair goals and leaves her hair smooth and clean. After rinsing her shampoo, Rio turns the shower water temperature to cool-not cold- to rinse out her conditioner. Rinsing with cold water as the last step in your shower routine will help preserve the natural oils in your hair and, in turn, will give your hair a shinier look. After rinsing, Rio squeezes all the excess water out of her hair and flips her head over to wrap her hair with a cotton t-shirt. Rio advises a cotton t-shirt over using a towel because the material in bath towels can snag the hair and cause frizz. She lets her hair sit in the wrap while she does her skincare and waits until she feels like her hair is “towel-dried.” Before moving to the next steps of the post-wash routine, the hair should be slightly damp but not excessively wet.
The following steps involve some of Rio’s favorite “cocktail combinations” of hair products. She will use Killer.Waves and Killer.Curls by Kevin Murphy. Killer.Waves can be used for people with fine, wavy, or curly hair looking to add volume, definition, and texture to their hair. On the other hand, Killer.Curls is for medium to coarse wavy or curly hair, which helps to define natural curls. Depending on the type of hair day Rio is having, she will sometimes spray the Sea Salt Hairspray from Eleven or the Hair.Resort.Spray by Kevin Murphy for some extra volume and texture. Rio will scrunch her hair from the bottom up to ensure maximum body and texture. She will curl and clip up those strands for the straighter pieces if she wants more volume and shape. Scrunching the hair will also allow the products she put on her hair to spread evenly and ensure maximum product coverage. Sometimes she will also put her hair in a claw clip after scrunching for a simple yet sleek hairstyle.
Rio’s daughter has big, fluffy, and loose curls. Therefore, her daughter’s hair goals are different from Rio’s hair goal of texture. She can go a little heavier with her hair care routine because she wants her curls to hold and stay in their natural shape. It is super important to recognize what your hair goals are. Ask your stylist what the best product routine would be to reach your goals at your next appointment!
If you prefer a sleek, silky, and straight hairstyle, then this is the routine for you. A double shampoo is the first step in our silky and straight haircare routine. A double shampoo is necessary for any hair type. The first shampoo can be a detox shampoo to remove all of the product and dirt buildup from the strand for the second wash. A few great first-wash shampoos are the K18 shampoo and the Maxi.Wash by Kevin Murphy. For the second shampoo, if you have a problem with volume and body, Rio recommends the Plumping.Wash shampoo and conditioner by Kevin Murphy. This Kevin Murphy line aids in plumping up your hair in all the right places and moisturizing from root to tip without weighing the hair down. She also recommends the I Want Body Volume shampoo and conditioner by Eleven. This line promises to add body and volume to the hair while strengthening it. She also recommends the Leaf and Flower Volume shampoo and conditioner. This line plumps the hair strands while maintaining the hair follicle’s integrity.
After washing the hair, ensure you are squeezing the excess water before you get out of the shower. After getting out of the shower, be sure to part your hair where you want it to lay. Then, diagnose your hair needs for the day to determine which products you will use. If you are utilizing heat to style your hair (if it is not naturally straight or you want to curl it), you need to make sure to put a heat protectant on it. Rio’s all-time favorite heat protectant is the Heated.Defense by Kevin Murphy. This product perfectly protects the hair strands while feeling weightless. Rio’s main hair goal is volume, so she will utilize a mouse or any volumizing product on her roots before styling. Her favorite tool at the moment is the Dyson Airwrap™. She will blowdry until her hair is 80% dry while leaving the crown of her head to dry last. She recommends utilizing the round brush attachments for her desired volume. This technique gives her hair a very loose but voluminous curl. For a medium volume, direct the hair straight from the root. For maximum volume, direct the hair at an angle from where the hair grows to pull the hair further back, which will create more body. Once your hair is completely dry, you can stop at this step for a gorgeous blowout or grab your hot tool. Rio recommends using a flat iron if you want straight ends. If you aren’t too keen on using a flat iron, Rio recommends the Bio Ionic Long Barrel curling iron-especially for long hair. This tool is between a wand and a curling iron which is very user-friendly. Rio likes to section the hair into about six long sections, leaving another section for the crown of the head. Be sure to curl away from your face for maximum volume. Once done curling your whole head, let the curls cool completely before brushing out the curls. If you don’t allow the curls to cool completely, they will not set and won’t be long-lasting. After brushing, Rio likes to use the Shimmer.Shine by Kevin Murphy. This shine spray adds shine without adding any oily residue. You can also touch up any curls that need to be touched up and straighten your ends if you desire that look. Rio recommends using a good texture hairspray or dry oil if you prefer a long-lasting style. Rio’s favorite is the Bedroom.Hair by Kevin Murphy. She will spray the product from roots to ends about a foot away from her head. After spraying, she will run the product through her hair with her fingers.
These are two basic hair care routines that you can achieve at home! If you are looking to achieve specific hair goals, tailor your products to those hair goals. Consult your stylist at your next appointment if they have advice on what products to use that fit your hair. If you are ready to buy new products, come by the salon and purchase any of the products discussed in the blog.
We look forward to seeing you in the salon soon!
